Cell Phone Plans in Canada - confusing and expensive

image

I’ve been thinking about cell phones when I move back to Canada. I’m in need of a phone and a tablet. Ideally I’d like to get a galaxy tab, as I won’t buy Apple products, and a regular (non smart phone). Alternatively I’d get a smart phone and a wifi only tablet and tether the tablet to the phone when there’s no wifi available.

In any case I’m not sure exactly what I’m going to end up with but I have been looking at cell phone plans in Canada and all I can say is that it’s bloody confusing and extremely expensive.

I was chatting with a twitter friend who lives in Toronto (via skype) the other day and he recommended Rogers for internet and phones. Said they were the best despite their reputation. Will be looking at Internet a few weeks after I arrive since I won’t have a house. However I do need a cell phone strait away in order to be able to call rental listings and car listings.

The plans offered by Rogers are incredibly confusing and expensive. The choices don’t make any sense. Really, why offer unlimited calls between 3pm and 6pm or after 7pm. How are these options useful? Here in Korea I pay about $35 for unlimited everything. My friends with iphones are paying $50 a month for unlimited data and unlimited calls.

Oh and even more of a consumer rip-off on cell phones is that you get charged whether you are calling or receiving calls. Before I had an unlimited plan in Korea I only paid if I made the call. Also what’s up with the need to charge long distance rates when calling between cities? It doesn’t cost Rogers any extra money to route the call since everything is already there. here I pay the same rate whether I’m calling just down the road or on Jeju island a 70minute flight away.

Also heard some good things about Koodo Mobile and Wind Mobile. If anyone has thoughts on either of these, I’d appreciate it.

According to the Marmot, Korean phone contracts will soon be more confusing:
