Jajjang Myon

Today I ordered Jajjang Myon for dinner for my kids. This is thick noodles in a black sauce with bits of pork and vegetables. Despite not being Chinese food it is only available in Chinese restaurants and is a popular dish to order in. I know it’s not Chinese food because about 10 years ago I had a Chinese Korean student in my class who owned a Chinese restaurant and I asked her. She told me that it’s Korean food, but every Chinese restaurant has it because it’s expected.

One thing I like about ordering food in Korea is that everything you order comes in real dishes, not paper or alumnimum. Once you finish eating your meal, you put the dishes back outside your door and about an hour later the delivery guy comes back and picks it up.

The food looks good. The thing with the dishes is something you probably could not pay, at least not in Europe.

It was actually invented by Chinese immigrants to Korea in Incheon…so it is, and isn’t, a Chinese food…but that’s the story of how it got here and came to be associated with Chinese food - kind of like Fortune Cookies in the USA. Cheers!

What a great idea - using real dishes for take-out. I wonder if they lose a lot of their dishes? That could only work in a very dense urban area with the delivery zone in very tight proximity to the restaurant I think. Very environmentally friendly. And for the little bit of extra time it takes to pick up the dishes and wash them, they save themselves the cost of paper/styrofoam/bags/etc. AND the cost of disposing of them.
